Fireworks and Cats

Firework season gets longer and longer every year and whilst they can be a lot of fun for people of all ages it can be a stressful and dangerous time for our pets. What can we as pet lovers do to try and keep their stress to a minimum and keep them safe…

Outdoor Access

If your cat usually has outdoor access, then you may want to consider not allowing this either at all or at least not from dusk to dawn.

 

Safe spaces

Often when scared cats they like to have a choice of safe boltholes so providing additional dens can be of great comfort. If you have noticed your pet going to a particular area when unsettled, you could use this area. Put own a comfy cushion maybe a box or blanket to hide under. For cats in great distress during fireworks, try moving them to the center of the house furthest away from the noice, often a bathroom is a good choice as this is often the quietest room in the house and away from windows. Put a blanket or pet bed down, food, water, and a litter tray/puppy pad to allow your pet to stay there as long as it likes.

 

Stay Calm

Whilst our nature is to make a fuss whilst trying to tell our cat not to worry it is in fact much better for them to see us stay calm and acting as normal, this sends the signal that there is nothing to worry about. Our cats love company and if possible, try and stay in with them, draw the curtains (to keep the flashes out) put on the TV and/or radio, and sit down in your usual spot demonstrating all is well.

If your cat is really stressed and you have made them a den in the toilet, why not put a cushion down for yourself bring your tablet and watch a movie on the floor together.

According to International Cat Care about 39-52% of cats in the UK are overweight or obese, so Dirk is certainly not the only one. As you all know, being overweight can lead to other health problems as well, diabetes for example. It can also lead to issues with the lower urinary tract, such as cystitis. I didn’t actually know this until Dirk developed urinary issues (bladder stones) several years ago. At that point he weighed 5.9 kg, so his weight may well have been a contributing factor. He’s a pretty big guy, but the vet recommended an ideal weight of 5 kg. Given his bladder and weight issues, Dirk is permanently on a special diet, which also means he doesn’t get treats… Fortunately he seems to love his dental dry food as much as treats, so we make him chase those all around the house. We strictly monitor how much he’s eating and of course we try and get him to play as much as possible. Luckily he loves his toys 🙂

If you are considering a certain breed then it is worth researching this breed as much as possible before you go out and buy one. Certain breeds can be more likely to suffer from particular health problems and have different characteristics that may make them more or less suitable for some home situations (for example if you are planning to keep them in as a house cat).
